On Twitter, Google’s John Mueller said that Google thinks that the nofollow tag is working well:
In talking with various folks internally, my feeling is that overall this has been, and still is, working fairly well. I haven't seen many cases of sites causing themselves significant issues, or of pages not getting "credit" in quite some time.

The nofollow attribute enables webmaster to link to other websites without endorsing the linked website:
“In general, we [Google ]don’t follow them. This means that Google does not transfer PageRank or anchor text across these links. Essentially, using nofollow causes us to drop the target links from our overall graph of the web.”
How to check which links are nofollow
The tools in SEOprofiler enable you to check nofollow links that are related to your website. For example, the Link Profiler tools can show the nofollow links that point to your site:
The website audit tool in SEOprofiler shows you the internal links on your website that use the nofollow tag. In general, you shouldn’t use the nofollow tag in links to pages on your own website because that means that you do not trust your own links.
