Google’s Matt Cutts announced the next generation of Google’s Penguin update yesterday in his blog:
We started rolling out the next generation of the Penguin webspam algorithm this afternoon (May 22, 2013), and the rollout is now complete.
About 2.3% of English-US queries are affected to the degree that a regular user might notice. The change has also finished rolling out for other languages world-wide. The scope of Penguin varies by language, e.g. languages with more webspam will see more impact.
This is the fourth Penguin-related launch Google has done, but because this is an updated algorithm (not just a data refresh), we’ve been referring to this change as Penguin 2.0 internally.
This new Penguin update is a major change. That’s why Google refers to it as Penguin 2.0.
What is the Penguin update?
Google’s Penguin update targets websites that use so-called black-hat techniques to manipulate Google’s search results. These techniques include keyword stuffing, cloaking, and, most importantly, participating in link schemes.
After publishing the update, Google’s Matt Cutts tweeted the following:
Here’s a special spam report form: bit.ly/penguinspamrep… Please tell us about the spammy sites that Penguin missed.— Matt Cutts (@mattcutts) 23. Mai 2013
It’s clear that Google is serious about removing all spammy websites from the search results.
