    How Google detects paid links

Backlinks are still Google’s most important ranking signal. That’s why many businesses buy links to artificially improve the rankings of their websites. This can be very risky because Google doesn’t like paid links at all. If you use paid links to promote your website, you put your rankings at risk.

    Avoid risky tactics

Google has several ways to detect paid links:

    1. Your competitors can send spam reports

On its information page about paid links, Google encourages webmasters to report the paid links of other sites:

"If you see a site that is buying or selling links that pass PageRank, let us know. We’ll use your information to improve our algorithmic detection of such links."

    2. Google’s manual spam fighters can find the links

Google employs people who do nothing else than judging the quality of Google’s search results. They also employ people who look for spam and paid links.

    3. Google’s algorithm can detect the links

Based on the paid links report, Google could develop algorithms that can detect paid links automatically:

"We’ll use your information to improve our algorithmic detection of such links."

Matt Cutts, head of Google’s webspam team, said in several of his blog posts that Google’s algorithms had been able to detect paid links before they were reported in a manual spam report.

It is difficult and time-consuming to get good backlinks to your website. That’s why backlinks play such an important role in Google’s ranking algorithm.

Fully automated link systems are risky

Some websites promise quick solutions with fully automated link building systems. These link building systems have been created to game Google’s algorithm and that’s why Google will downrank your website as soon as they find out that your website participates in such a link system. It’s better to avoid fully automated link building systems.

Real backlinks lead to lasting results

If you want to get lasting results, it is better to use SEO tools that play by the rules. SEOprofiler offers several link building tools that help you to improve the backlink structure of your website:

    link building tools

In addition the the link building tools, SEOprofiler also offers a sophisticated backlink manager that helps you to manage your backlinks quickly and easily.

How to work with the ranking monitor: part 3 of 8

The new ranking monitor in SEOProfiler enables you to check the position of your web pages on Google, Yahoo and Bing. In this article series, we explain how to work with the ranking monitor. This blog post is about the ‘Top pages’ panel in the ranking monitor.

Which pages of your website rank for the most keywords?

The ‘Top pages’ panel shows which pages of your website are listed on Google, Yahoo and Bing:

    top ranked pages

Which search engine list the most pages of your site?

Does Google show more pages than Bing? Do Yahoo and Bing show different pages although they use the same index?

    ranking charts

The charts in the ‘Top pages’ panel have the answer:

    • Pages with the most rankings: this chart shows the page of your website that have the most rankings on Google, Yahoo and Bing.
    • Number of ranked pages per search engine: this chart shows how many different pages of your website are listed on each search engine.

How does this information help you?

Some websites have high rankings on Google, Yahoo and Bing for many different pages. Other sites have high rankings for a handful of websites.

If you have a website with many pages, all of these pages should have high rankings for at least some keywords. If only a few of your pages have high rankings, consider optimizing your other pages. Otherwise, you’re missing a lot of website visitors.

Which pages of your website can be improved?

Fortunately, the ranking monitor in SEOprofiler also tells you which pages of your website you could improve and which for which keywords your website could get better rankings.

The next part of our article series will show you how to work with the ‘Opportunities’ and ‘Alerts’ panels in SEOprofiler. The ‘Opportunities’ panel helps you to invest your time as efficiently as possible by focusing on keywords and pages that deliver quick results. The ‘Alerts’ panel enables you to identify potential problems.

    See for yourself

The ranking monitor shows you detailed information about the position of your website on Google, Bing and Yahoo. Use that information to make informed decisions and create impressive PDF ranking reports for your clients.

Just login to your SEOprofiler account and test the new ranking manager for yourself. If you don’t have an account, you can create a free account here.

Your feedback, your SEOprofiler: the latest changes

We’re continually improving SEOprofiler to make sure that it is the best SEO solution that you can use to promote your business. Some days ago, we published our new competitive intelligence databases that offer you detailed information about the Google rankings of your competitors.

In addition to the major features that we have added to SEOprofiler in the previous months (comprehensive backlink manager, detailed ranking monitor, white-label PDF reports, etc.), we also continually improve SEOprofiler based on your feedback.

    Easier access to competitor URLs

For example, many of you have requested a feature that enables quick access to competitor URLs in the competitive intelligence tools. We have just added a competitor menu to all tools that analyze competitor URLs:

    quickly select competitors

The new menu enables you to quickly analyze the competitors that are listed in the competitor watchlist in your project dashboard:

    competitor watchlist

Of course, you can still enter any domain name that you want in the competitive analysis tools. The new menu is only a shortcut that helps you to quickly access the domains on your watchlist.

    Keep your suggestions coming

The better we know your needs, the better we can improve SEOprofiler for you. SEOprofiler already offers many great tools and features that help you to get better results with your website. Your feedback helps us to add the small additional features that make the difference between ‘great’ and ‘perfect’. ;-)

How the top 10 ranking guarantee in SEOprofiler works

You have probably seen the top 10 ranking guarantee that we offer SEOprofiler users: we guarantee that your website will be found in the organic (unpaid) search results on Google for the keywords of your choice.

    Guaranteed rankings

How can we guarantee top 10 rankings on Google and what’s the catch?

Many people will tell you that it is not possible to guarantee top 10 rankings on Google. That is correct. No one can guarantee top 10 rankings except for Google’s engineers.

However, the Top 10 Optimizer in SEOprofiler has a success rate of more than 98% and we will give you your money back if you belong to the very few people who don’t get top 10 rankings on Google with SEOprofiler.

How does it work in detail?

    1. You choose the keyword and the search engine

You enter the keyword for which you want to get a top 10 position and you choose the search engine on which you want to have a top 10 position. This can be Google.com, Google.co.uk, or many other local Google variations.

    2. The Top 10 Optimizer analyzes your web page

The Top 10 Optimizer will then analyze all the relevant ranking elements on your web page as well as the links to your website and calculate a ranking score based on that information. The higher the ranking score, the more likely it is that your website will be listed on Google’s first result page.

    3. SEOprofiler tells you in detail what you have to change

If your website does not have a 100% score, the Top 10 Optimizer report in SEOprofiler will tell you what exactly you have to do to improve your web page and the links to your site. The advice will be tailored to your website, the chosen search engine and the chosen keyword

The Top 10 Optimizer will tell you in detail what you have to change and how you have to change it.

    4. You make the changes on your web page

In the last step, you change your web page according to the suggestions of the Top 10 Optimizer until there are no further suggestions (the Top 10 Optimizer gives your site a 100% rating).

That’s it. No catch, no strings attached. If you change your website according to the Top 10 Optimizer in SEOprofiler then your website will be listed on Google’s first result page in the regular results.

    Simple rules

If you use the Top 10 Optimizer in SEOprofiler as described in the instructions and do not get a top 10 ranking, you will get a full refund of your last three monthly SEOprofiler membership fees.

In order to get the refund, the optimized web page must get a ranking score of at least 95% and you must have waited for at least 4 weeks after the 95% score (search engines need some time to reflect the changes). The ranking score shows that you really worked with the Top 10 Optimizer.

Other top 10 guarantees that have nothing to do with our guarantee

There are quite a few companies that offer top 10 guarantees. You should take a close look at their offerings. For example, some companies will charge you a monthly fee for the "optimization" and the only thing that they do is to take half of that fee to advertise your website on Google AdWords.

Other companies will give you a top 10 ranking guarantee, but only for keywords that they choose. It’s not difficult to get top 10 rankings for obscure keywords that nobody searches for. Unfortunately, these top 10 rankings won’t help your business at all.

A top 10 ranking guarantee should be for the keywords of your choice and it should be for the regular, organic search results. That’s the guarantee that you get with SEOprofiler.

How to use the keyword permutator in SEOprofiler

A keyword permutator is a great tool that can help you to quickly get targeted keyword lists for your Google AdWords campaigns. In this article, we’ll show you how to use the keyword permutator in SEOprofiler.

Step 1: write down keyword ideas

Say you run a shoe shop. You could use the following three keyword ideas:

    • hiking, sports, soccer, tennis
    • shoes, footwear, shoe

Step 2: Start the keyword combinator in SEOprofiler

You can find the keyword combinator at the following location in SEOprofiler:

Enter the keyword ideas in the three boxes and click the “Create combinations” button. You will get 48 new keywords that you can use with your Google AdWords ads:

    keyword permutator

The value of a top 10 ranking on Google

Everybody knows that it is important to be listed on Google’s first result page. However, how important is it exactly? How many clicks do the different positions on the first result page get and how much is a top 10 ranking worth in dollars?

The distribution of clicks on the first search result page

    Optify click distribution data

In April 2011, Optify published a new study that shows the distribution of clicks on the first search result page. According to their data, the number one result receives 36.4% of the clicks and the last result on the first result page gets 2.2% of all clicks.

According to their data, 60% of the clicks go to the top three. The first result page gets 89% of all clicks. Ranking first on the second page has some benefits because there’s a slight bump for position eleven (2.6%, the first result for page two) over the last position on page one (2.2%, position ten). The next highest click through rate (CTR) on result page 2 is 1.5%. All other positions have lower CTRs.

    BrandSoftech click distribution data

In June 2010, BrandSoftech published statistics based on the analysis of 63 websites that received 5,357,519 clicks from 29,327 different key phrases typed into Google. According to their study, the top result receives 38.19% of all clicks while the last listing on the first result page gets 2.59% of all clicks.

    AOL click distribution data

Some years ago, AOL accidentially published the search data of 650,000 AOL users. That data also revealed how often the different search results were clicked. According to the AOL data, the top result gets 42.13% of all clicks and the last result gets 2.99% of the clicks.

    Cornell click distribution data

The Cornell University conducted a user-behavoir study focused around search behavoir specifically on Google. They used an eye-tracking study of a sample of undergraduate students to determine clicks and attention distribution. According to their data, 56.36% of all clicks go to the top ranked website. The last result on the first result page gets 2.55% of all clicks.

All studies show that it is very important to be listed on the first result page and that the first result gets the majority of clicks:

Click distribution of first search result page

If your website is not listed on Google’s first result page for your most important keywords, you should do something about that. The Top 10 Optimizer in SEOprofiler can help you to get your website on Google’s first result page for keywords that deliver paying customers to your website.

The financial value of a top 10 ranking on Google

Having top 10 rankings is great but are the results really worth the time and effort? Here’s a simple example:

    • Say you run an ad on Google AdWords for a particular keyword that gets 10,000 impressions during a week. 200 visitors click the ad to visit your website.
    • 6 of these visitors purchase something on your website and the total profit is $500.

The keyword delivers 200 visitors and 6 buyers to your website. The total profit is $500. That means that the average single visitor who finds your website through that keyword is worth $2.50 to your business (200 visitors created a profit of $500: $500/200 visitors = $2.50/visitor).

In this example, 10,000 people search for the keyword every week. If your website was listed as the first result for the keyword, you would get 4327 visitors per week (43,27% of all clicks go to the top ranked page, as explained above, this example assumes that all searchers click a listing in the results).

As the average visitors adds $2.50 to your profits (see above) you would earn $10,817.50 per week with just one top ranking.

How to get your website on Google’s first result page

This example shows how important it is to optimize your web pages for top rankings on Google. SEOprofiler offers you the tools that you need to get high rankings for keywords that deliver sales on Google, Yahoo and Bing.
